Despite unprecedented scientific insight into the nature of the universe, most of the world’s population continues to reside in shadows cast by myth. In The Known Universe, ten California artists provide a fertile ground for observation, production, and critical discourse on this centuries-old struggle between science and superstition.
The most basic tenets of the scientific method, observation, measurement, experimentation, and modification--can also aptly describe the building blocks of an artist’s process. In this exhibition, curators Gipe+Tell have selected works in painting, sculpture, photography, installation, video, and computer graphics to elicit the ways in the ways in which scientific and creative processes are linked. Taking as their point of departure scientific disciplines from astronomy to zoology these artists attempt a quantifiable model of knowledge with a self-consciously ontological approach.
The opening reception features an additional performance by Achromaticist at 7pm. Achromaticist explores the relationship between spontaneous harmonies and atonality with the use of live broadcast manipulations, field recordings, and acousmatic sound.
